Travelling abroad. At the first hint of concern with authorities, contact your local Embassy, Consulate, or representing Consulate of your country. There is no need to go into any great formalities. A phone call followed by a brief but comprehensive email detailing your personal details along with a short statement outlining your situation. Always get the recipient to confirm by return email that they have received, and registered your situation. Registering at your consulate gives the local authorities a vague idea of what is happening with you in the event that the situation escalates down the track. If the local authorities are difficult and/or uncooperative let them know that you have registered the incident with your consulate. It may be all that is needed to help dissolve any further escalation. Respect locals and authorities, take what may be a trivial incident back home seriously. Try to nip any problem in the bud before it has time to escalate. Respect for locals and some basic common sense should be all you need to ensure a happy and memorable holiday.
